Mac Os El Capitan Usb Bootable

  1. As has been the case for the last few releases of OS X, the easiest method to make a USB install drive is with the free program, Diskmaker X. It’s been updated today to support El Capitan.
  2. Banglazed said: For simplicity, download the El Capitan, rename flash drive to ElCapInstaller, enter that above into terminal and boom done. Don’t need to format the USB since the command used in the terminal will format and create the bootable USB.

I'm a bit confused by your post on what you are trying to do here. Are you trying to boot into Recovery Mode to install macOS to an external USB drive or are you trying to boot from a macOS USB installer to install macOS to the internal drive?

It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. A bootable installer doesn't. Aug 21, 2019 For a clean install, at first, you will need a bootable version of OS X El Capitan installer. After getting a bootable drive or device follow the steps to boot-Insert the device containing os X El Capitan installer.

Here are the instructions for creating a bootable macOS USB installer:

Make sure to carefully read the section regarding macOS 10.11 as there are extra steps required to extract the real installer from the downloaded .dmg archive to the Applications folder. After running the .pkg file from the mounted .dmg file you can then proceed to use the command line to create the bootable macOS USB installer itself.

Macs are very picky about the drives used for booting a Mac plus the quality of many USB sticks is extremely poor so try using another USB stick especially a different brand.

When erasing the drive make sure to select the whole physical drive within Disk Utility and erase the physical drive as GUID partition and MacOS Extended (Journaled). The physical drive should be the top most item which is usually identified by the make & model of the drive itself.

Created a bootable USB with El Capitan installer

booted from it, erased my MBP (mid 2009), clean install from USB installer

decided to use migration assistant, most apps not working plus all the clutter from pre clean install

decided to do another clean install but MBP won't boot from USB and uses the recovery version instead.

tried to get Maverick back and basically ended up with a non-working MBP that went into a boot loop

did a reinstall from MAS, ended up DLing the entire Installer again, went to bed and in the morning and 'working'

MBP again, plus all the clutter and non working apps.

Made a new bootable USB key using terminal and yes it finished and yes it said bootable at the end as well as in Disk Utilities.

However when trying to boot from USB, start+Option, or start+cmd+r still no sign of the USB stick, which i guess would leave me

with a non clean install again.

Any help, suggestions.....?
